Bio & Contact
In July of 1999, I threw clay on the wheel for the first time. Earlier that same day I had moved into a new apartment and out of a relationship with my college love. Though I didn't at the time, I think of it now as the day I became an adult... stepping into independence and discovering a work that would become a huge part of who I am today.
Before long, I was completely hooked. I enrolled in a few classes and began taking them more seriously. I started going to the studio after work, on weekends and eventually (after an internet-bubble lay off) nearly every day. I was job hunting like mad, looking for work in a variety of fields contemplating what I should do, what would make me happy. But the more time I spent in clay the less I wanted to do anything else. Eventually, my search of high and low proving fruitless, I allowed myself to focus on the very scary but most obvious option right in front of me.
I've been selling my work, as Downing Pottery, for about seven years now. To be able to make a pot that someone can afford to buy, take home and use is a very simple pleasure that I hope to indulge in for as long as I am able. There is an inherent enrichment in eating from a bowl that has been considered, or drinking from a mug whose handle was intended. I don't fancy myself an artist, just someone whose work it is to bring that experience into the everyday.
